The Mighty Mouth Campaign

And since basic Medicare does not include coverage for dental care, it’s even more important to have a plan to protect your oral health. Oral disease greatly reduces a person’s quality of life.  It is linked to other serious diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. In addition, oral disease leads to tooth and bone loss, making it difficult to eat a well-balanced diet, which is especially important as we age.

Up to 64 percent of people 65 and older have moderate or severe gum disease. Incredibly, one in three older adults suffers from dry mouth, a condition usually caused by medications that can quickly lead to severe and painful cavities.

But there is good news – oral disease is preventable!  That’s why the Washington Dental Service Foundation (WDS Foundation) has launched The Mighty Mouth campaign. The campaign is about raising public awareness and helping people understand the importance of oral health and its relation to overall health. This includes saving money. Every cavity prevented saves up to $2,000 over a lifetime. And with 28 teeth this is a significant savings! Talk with your dentist, doctor, and pharmacists about oral health and why a healthy mouth matters.
